Dharminder's father committed suicide only a month before we arrived to his home. When he held his fathers picture in his palm, his hand trembled and he fought back tears. The memories of his fathers' death were too raw. However in another village, a little boy named Jagtar, is unable to relate to the loss of his father. He was born 3 months after his father committed suicide and has no recollection, stories or sadly even a picture to remember his father by. Naresh and his sister Parveen, in a neighboring village shared the horrifying story of how their mother committed suicide by burning her self-alive in the middle of the night while the family slept. It's important to note that India does not recognize women as farmers despite their contribution to farming. Therefore, the numbers of women who commit suicide are not even reflected in any of the country's statistics.
